Is it really a safety issue? How many minor league games go into extra innings and how many extra does it take to settle the outcome?

If it's a length of game thing, and if Manfred sees it as a lab test for the majors, he has lost his mind.

What a pickoff.

Add the Indians picking up Rajai Davis, Napoli, Carlos Torres, Matt Belisle, and Hanigan all on minor league deals ... the ChiSox doing the same with Hector Santiago, Bruce Rondon, and Jeanmar Gomez  ... the Royal's masterful end game (Duda, Moose, Jay) that I'd mentioned before ...

The AL Central became kind of the "Island of Misfit Toys".

Detroit for some reason stayed largely out of the free-for-all, only acquiring Travis Wood.

As well as Odorizzi.

Bucos dabbled a bit with the dumps too, dangling Cutch and Cole.

Funny how the Twins of all teams reaped some opportunistic windfalls on this by playing the waiting game.  They picked up Odorizzi, LoMo, and Lynn (along with Duke, Rodney, and Reed earlier for the pen).

Seems like the Rays did their part as well - when they dealt Longoria that definitely hurt Moose, and their Souza and Dickerson deals also diminished the market for guys like Jay and Cargo.

Interesting if not entirely coherent read suggesting the reason for the weak FA market this year was because of all the Marlins dump trades, by Brad Johnson at FanGraphs. It has to be considered.

When a player is designated for assignment, he's immediately off the 40-man roster. His team has 10 days to (1) trade him, (2) release him, (3) outright him, or (4) restore him to the 40-man roster. Of course (4) rarely happens.

Very useful. Brought back to the top of the Recents for handy reference.

DFA is the same as outrighting?

A reminder about what different transaction types mean (and a suggestion you play OOTP for a few seasons to understand rosters better than you ever will otherwise).

"Assigned" means a player on a minor league contract got sent to the minor league camp.

"Optioned" means a player on the 40-man roster got sent to the minor league camp.  Players only have so many "Option" years when they can be sent without going through waivers to the minors so using an option can be a big deal.

"Purchased" generally means a player was added to the 40-man roster.  You'll see a slew of these the last couple of days before the season starts for players who signed minor league contracts with NRIs and prospects who aren't on the 40-man roster but make the major league roster out of spring or later in the year. (e.g. Neither Acuna or Kingery are on the 40-man roster so if they make the major league active roster (23 man), they will have to be added to the 40-man roster which will likely show up as a purchase).

"Outrighting" means a player is being removed from the 40 man roster.  Any player outrighted can be claimed by other teams.  If a player has 5 years of major league service, he can refuse to be outrighted and is then a free agent.

I'll group transactions here that seem interesting as Spring goes one.  Obviously, it might make sense to propagate the big-name assignments to minor league camp, but the smaller ones seem like a good thing to lump together.  If you care about the AL then you'll have to do your own work :-)

March 2nd -- Reds reassigned RHPs Barrett Astin, Ben Rowen and Domingo Tapia to their minor league camp.

March 5th --  Braves optioned RHPs Akeel Morris and RHP Jason Hursh to Gwinnett (IL).

March 6th -- Optioned: Lebya (Ariz), Anderson (Phi)
                     Outrighted: Ravin (Atl)
