It's become a thing. Like the Angels, the Padres pitchers are told to go surfing to chill between starts.

Yu Darvish (P) SD - May. 06
https://www.rotowire.com/baseball/player.php?id=9601

Darvish (3-1) recorded the win during Friday's 3-2 victory over Miami, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in seven innings.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Darvish didn't have his most dominant stuff, San Diego jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and a Jesus Aguilar home run was the only offense Miami could manage. Aside from a blow-up outing against San Francisco on April 12, the 35-year-old has registered five quality starts totaling 31.2 innings while permitting only six runs. San Diego is currently going with a six-man rotation so Darvish tentatively lines up to face Atlanta on Friday.

He has become more curmudgeonly in the last two decades, something that guys like Scully somehow avoided. Costas laments changes in the game, style of play, and even seems to believe that today's players aren't as good as his generation's heroes.

So I checked and Costas is 70.  And damn, he LOOKS 45.  I hope he isn't too far gone, because his voice, tone, cadence etc. are iconic.  And he clearly loves baseball.

Didn't watch this game but was wondering the other day if Costas had lost a step. Hopefully it's just a step.

I watched nearly all of the epic Padres/Dodgers game yesterday.  Darvish was wild through 3, then settled down into unhittable for the next 3.  On the night, he tossed 6 shutout innings, allowed 1 hit while walking 3.  And generally silencing that fearsome Dodgers lineup with 7 strikeouts.

On a side note, how old is Bob Costas now?  He was generally incoherent and borderline senile from the pregame on.  He called CJ Abrams "CJ Adams" for 3 innings before someone in his earpiece must have corrected him.  And his rambling comments about his conversations with Darvish seemed totally irrelevant to what was happening with Darvish on the mound.  Sad to watch.

But a great game on a beautiful day in San Diego, with the Pads winning in 10 when CJ "Adams" scored on a sac fly.

Darvish was the only stater who retired a batter in the seventh inning on Sunday: 6.2 IP, 96 pitches. With a rain out, there were 14 games. Starting pitchers won six of them.

Statcast xERA: 3.29

Forecaster xERA: 3.74

Statcast thinks Darvish's actual ERA should have been almost a full run better. So does everyone who owned him.

I realize he's got a huge assortment of pitches but shouldn't he throw that fastball more often?
