Gonsolin was named a candidate for the 2020 rotation Sunday, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A spot in the Dodgers' 2020 starting rotation opened up Saturday when David Price announced that he would opt out of playing, and manager Dave Roberts named Gonsolin among three candidates to fill a starting role. Ross Stripling and Dustin May are also in contention for the role, but it wouldn't be surprising to see all three of them take on some starting duties during the abbreviated 2020 season. Gonsolin performed well during his first major-league stint in 2019, posting a 2.93 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 11 appearances (six starts).

More helium for Gonsolin:

Tony Gonsolin, RHP, Dodgers

Scout's Take: "I really like him, even if it’s in a (Ross) Stripling type of role. I do think he’s going to be an impact guy for them. He’s going to bridge the gap that they’ll need because they’re going to go basically fourth and fifth starter by committee during the year. It’s really good stuff. He showed four pitches that he can throw for strikes that are all at least average to above average. The velo is there, he’s on the attack, the changeup looked really good. It’s all there.”

Note that an average fastball velocity of 93.7 puts him only in the 68th percentile.

No. 6 on Matt Eddy's list at Baseball America of breakout pitching candidates:

6. Tony Gonsolin, RHP, Dodgers

Velocity: 68% | O-Swing: 47% | Z-Contact: 94% | F-Strike: 34%

28 IP: 2.89 ERA, 3.96 FIP, 12.3 SwStr (80%)

Projected role: rotation depth | Age: 25

Gonsolin played both ways at St. Mary’s but quickly adapted to becoming a full-time pitcher in pro ball. He reached the majors in his fourth pro season and enters 2020 as the No. 82 prospect in baseball. The Dodgers’ seemingly endless supply of rotation options makes Gonsolin a risky gamble for his starts, but he is a sound long-term play based on his wide repertoire. Not only did he throw four offerings with positive pitch value in his debut, but his unique split-changeup give him a different look.
