Mild shoulder strain ... assuming there is such a thing for an MLB pitcher :-(

On top of pitching "for three months after a large elbow spur was discovered"

Change yellow flags to red ...

Matz drove in four runs in his major league debut. I happened to see that game. I believe his entire family was packed into the stands. Pretty great.

Guess how many other pitchers have done that? Knock in four in their first game in the majors?

None.

On the Pecota leaderboards in the phone book version of Baseball Prospectus...

WARP, ROOKIES (pitchers)

Steven Matz 1.8

John Lamb 1.3

Jonathan Gray 1.3

Zach Davies 1.1

Josh Smith 1.1

Another interesting addition to the phone book (besides DRA and cFIP, described under Cole and Carrasco) is two-year projections. Matz's WARP in 2017 will actually decline slightly to 1.4. His projected BABIP, ERA, FIP, DRA and cFIP are all slightly higher in 2017. In one less start (25 instead of 26).

In the commentary we learn he "experienced a Harvey-esque velocity explosion. Previously clocked in the low 90s, Matz's 94.6 mph average fastball velocity was behind only Chris Sale and David Price" among lefties.

There's the attention-getter.
