Four years to the Cardinals. $44M. Looks like pitchers are mostly going to be signed before the lockout. Kind of undermines the purpose of the lockout, which is a good thing.

There are eight teams in on Matz which shows you how valuable middling arms are in the baseball world and how much people buy into second half momentum (Matz had a 2.91 ERA down the stretch). My gut says he's an overpay for whoever signs him (i.e. he'll be a 3 / 4 type of starter but get paid as a 2). MLBTR projects 3/27. I think 3/33 or 4/40.

I think our three bids were just about right, considering the risk/reward.

Leaving New York for Canada proved quite the panacea for the Long Islander.

Prediction: Twins, three years, $36 million

No qualifying offer
November 7, 2021
The Blue Jays did not give Matz an $18.4 million qualifying offer, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Matz recently turned down a multi-year contract offer, the value of which is unknown. The lefty excelled in 2021 with a 3.82 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 144 strikeouts in 150.2 innings, but for a back-end starter in Toronto's rotation, $18.4 million would have been a steep price. Matz, entering his age 31 season, figures to draw plenty of interest on the open market.

Steven Matz (P) TOR - Jul. 06
https://www.rotowire.com/baseball/player.php?id=790370

Matz (7-4) took the loss Tuesday at Baltimore after giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and zero walks across four innings.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander generated 10 swinging strikes on only 68 pitches, but he also gave up plenty of hard contact with Pedro Severino and Cedric Mullins taking him deep. Matz has allowed seven earned runs over 6.2 frames in two starts since returning from the injured list. He has a 4.72 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 82:21 K:BB in 76.1 innings this season, and he's projected to start Sunday in Tampa Bay to close out the first half of the season for Toronto.

Steven Matz (P) TOR - Mar. 18

https://www.rotowire.com/baseball/player.php?id=765973

Matz is expected to begin the regular season in the starting rotation, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Matz served as a swingman for the Mets during the abbreviated 2020 season and posted a 9.68 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over 30.2 innings while making nine appearances (six starts). While the Blue Jays could use openers to begin the regular season, Matz is expected to have a starting role, although his spot in the rotation hasn't been determined. The southpaw has made two Grapefruit League starts for the Blue Jays and he's allowed two hits and no walks while striking out six across five scoreless innings.

Joins Roark and Ray as Blue Jays starters earning more than -$20 in 2020.  Or is that less than $-20. I get confused once the numbers get that large. Or small.

In the shortened season there are extremes at both ends. Think 81 innings with a 9.79 ERA, 1.71 WHIP,  and no wins or saves.

The "horrifying number" that Peter cites -- 14 HR in 30 IP -- is why the Rating is even more horrifying.

WOW 4x4 -$27 in 30 1/3 IP. That seems impossible.
