Wouldn't the counter-argument be that nobody (particularly not the starters) got overused last year?

Alex -- The theory I've heard is that because of the short warmup to the 2020 season, pitchers were never properly stretched out (I have no idea what the average IP/start was last year but it was theoretically less). Therefore, the pitchers are now doing something to their arms that they had done for the 15 years previous to last year, but didn't do last year and their arms aren't ready for the stress. It's like taking a 20 year old car and turning it into your day to day beater after it's been sitting idle for a year.

Verducci Rule, I think. Which is kind of creationist nonsense with maybe the grain of truth that we all need something to believe in. But there is science and data in usage and reliability that I don't have access to that's driving some of this.

The fact is teams are invested in young arms and are going to protect their investments. Caution isn't always the best guide, but sometimes it is. That the conversation keeps getting more detailed helps us understand the issues.

Has anyone explained exactly why pitchers' arms are more at risk after a 60-game season?

Shut down for a month. This might be a year to use the UT spot for a pitcher if you have the chance in your league. LOTS of this shutdown nonsense going to happen after the weird season we had last year.
