Thread: Stage Four

It doesn’t exist. But we keep hoping.

TMU, this is the site I follow in the spring, seems to be updated daily, and then locks in each roster on Opening Day:

This is sort of a mechanics question, but maybe someone has a good idea:

Our league is over 30 years old, and our rules are heavily dependent on having good real-world Opening Day rosters.  Used to be we could get them from Sports Weekly, but that's long gone.  For a couple of years, we've gotten good OD rosters from Rotoworld -- but last year's OD rosters on their website had several errors/inaccuracies/whatever.  Anyone know how to get good Opening Day rosters, short of going to 15 different teams' websites?

Plain Wheeler Dealer League is looking for new team owner(s), Cleveland area league, AL only, 5x5 with keepers, going strong since 1991.

For the first time, we have lost several owners, as many as 4 long-time players who have decided to retire from the stress of Roto. We will change keeper rules for this year with the goal of a competitive start for all 12 teams in 2018, with only 5 keepers per team, and new owners can grab unkept keepers to get to 5 if needed. Available teams, as many as 4, include the 2 teams I think have the best freeze lists.

Let me know soonest. Great league to play in. Friendly, competitive. League meeting in person in February. Auction in person next April, so owners need to be reasonably close to Cleveland. $100 to play plus transaction fees of $1. But it’s not about the money. Email: [email protected]

We look forward not back and I don't know if this league uses AVG or OBP but Abreu in round 2 and Smoak in round 9 is a big difference for players who had similar 2017 seasons.  Of course also in rd 9 are Lamb and Story, two others with the ability to hit 30 HRs with lower averages and decent to very good walk rates so maybe Smoak's in the right place.  I'd be happy with any of the 3 depending on needs.

Many of the 1B could end up with similar HR, OBP & SLG numbers.

We're now into the "terrible teens" stage of the draft. We're likely to see some serious spec picking in the next 5-to-6 rounds.

Bump so I can keep up with your draft.

Interesting discussion between Tango and MGL on Twitter this evening.

  1. Anyone who plays Fantasy sports has a(n implicit) 100% understanding of replacement level. If you don't understand "replacement level", then play Fantasy sports.

  2. Aspiring saberists: Historically, try and identify players who play for around the minimum salary (or a little more for veterans) who are not protected. These are your replacement players by definition. Then look at their total production relative to average (like linear weights

  3. ...runs), for offense, defense, and base running. Break down by position. Over many years (to smooth out random fluctuation) this is your replacement level. Would also be interesting to see any historical trends.

I hemmed and hawwed on Freeman/Abreu and the safe consistent floor from Abreu was appealing to me. They are both very close imho. The issue was finding a 1B type. Freeman was taken right after me, no shocker, and that would make five (six if you include Bellinger) 1B types off-the-board in the first 25 picks. I really don't like the next 5-to-6 options at 1B. My plan was to try and get one of Bregman, Benintendi, Dozier, or Buxton with my third pick. The only one left at Pick # 37 was Buxton.

Thanks for sharing!  I'm curious of your thoughts on selecting Abreu over Freeman (or Judge or JD Martinez & others if not 1B focused).
