The key to winning the wild card (now): two ace starting pitchers at the top of their game.

Rotoworld:

09.01: Shane Bieber matched a season-high with 11 strikeouts over seven innings on Thursday in a loss the Orioles. (Bieber
delivered one of his strongest outings of the season, limiting the
Orioles' lineup to a trio of solo home runs over seven frames, but wound
up being outdueled by Orioles' rookie Kyle Bradish and saddled with a
loss. He generated an eye-popping 20 swinging strikes and finished with
an elite 37 percent CSW (called strikes plus whiffs).

Shane Bieber lost his Maddox today against the White Sox in the 7th when he hit Vaughn, who later scored. 4-1 game of 9 innings, no walks, 3 hits, 7 Ks, 95 pitches

Shane Bieber (P) CLE - Jun. 30
https://www.rotowire.com/baseball/player.php?id=14383

Bieber allowed three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five across six innings Thursday against the Twins. He did not factor into the decision.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Bieber allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases in the third inning before surrendering a bases-clearing double to Jose Miranda. He pitched well otherwise and still managed to turn in his fourth consecutive quality start. Overall, Bieber has a 3.16 ERA and 93:22 K:BB across 91 frames on the season.

05.14: Shane Bieber delivered a strong performance in a no-decision against the Twins on Saturday, racking up seven strikeouts over six innings of one-run baseball. (The right-hander scattered seven hits while issuing three free passes. The
only blemish on his day came on a mammoth solo homer that he served up
to Gio Urshela in the fourth inning. Bieber generated just seven
swinging strikes on his 109 pitches in the ballgame, posting a CSW of 29
percent. He'll carry a 3.72 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 36/12 K/BB ratio into
Saturday's battle against the Tigers in Cleveland.)

Ginny Serle at BP takes note of Bieber's decreased fastball velo, and then goes on to observe that another of his weapons seems to have all but vanished.

What exactly happened to the cutter is a matter of debate. Per Savant pitch classifications, it accounts for 10.3% of his oeuvre this year, but PitchInfo (which powers Brooks) puts him at just a pair of cutters for the year (and six changeups, that pitch dipping to about a fifth of his career usage). The inner workings of PitchInfo and Savant pitch classifications are too complicated to get into here, but note that in 2020, Bieber saw extremely similar spin on the cutter and slider with a 4.7 mph velocity differential, while this season the speed gap is just 1.5 mph while the spin remains near-identical.

SL MPHFC MPHΔSL RPMFC RPMΔ

202185.788.22.526832630-53
202284.5861.52462249230

Resultantly, the pitch has failed to be differentiated from the slider in any meaningful sense, and is effectively only acting as a slightly faster version. Remember how I said that cutter was acting as a bridge? Well, you know what happens when bridges collapse.

His velocity was down again. He couldn't find the plate and when he did he found too much of it. Such an altogether bad outing that probably we should write it off.

Probably.

05.07: Shane Bieber was lifted after just 3 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs in a loss on Saturday to the Blue Jays.  (Not
great. Bieber gave up eight hits with three walks, and most
concerningly, he didn't strike out a single batter. The 26-year-old had
pitched well as of late -- particularly last week when he went seven
innings while allowing one run against the A's -- but he gave up four in
the second and was charged for three more in the fourth before exiting.
The 2020 Cy Young winner sees his ERA increase to 4.13, and Bieber will
try and bounce back next weekend against the Twins. )

Yet another article in BP today about decreased HR rates in April vs April comparisons and potential variables as causes.  Run scoring down, offense in decline etc.  If Bieber's velo is down and offenses are down, might they negate each other leaving Bieber just as valuable as before?  Further, where is this info actionable now in trade objectives?

His fastball is down two mph. He should still be successful but he's not going to be the $31 pitcher I paid for.
