Kansas City Royals — Scott Barlow was excellent Thursday, throwing two hitless innings to pick up his second save (his first came on April 15). He’s the league’s only pitcher with two six-out saves this season, and his season line is great — 1.86 ERA, 43 K in just 29 IP. Greg Holland hasn’t pitched since Monday, so perhaps it was no accident Barlow was out there with the game on the line Thursday. To be fair to Holland, though, Monday’s appearance was his third in three days, so perhaps extra rest was warranted. Mike Matheny will probably mix and match until his top option Josh Staumont makes his return (which could come soon).

Hierarchy remains: *Holland | Barlow | Zimmer.
* = closer-by-committee

KC trailed 7-0 after seven, scored three in the eighth, four in the ninth to pull even, then lost in the bottom of the ninth. Ten games ago their record was 16-9. Today it's 16-18.

Barlow (1-1) allowed a run on a hit, a walk and a hit-by-pitch with two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning. He took the loss Tuesday versus Detroit.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow's lack of control Tuesday led to Detroit getting two runners aboard. Robbie Grossman then tagged a walkoff single to stick Barlow with his first loss of the season. The right-hander owns a 2.84 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 25:8 K:BB across 19 innings this season. He's picked up one save, five holds and a blown save while frequently serving in a high-leverage role.

Two guys in my league knew on auction day that Barlow was valuable . I stopped bidding at 6; the other guy bid 7. Funny story afterward. He said he had bought Kennedy at 9 and was thinking Barlow as a handcuff. He forgot Kennedy moved to Texas. At the time I thought 16 was way too much for both, but he may have done well.

Who knew he earned $10 last year?

Barlow recorded the save in Thursday's win over the Blue Jays.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old earned an impressive multi-inning save, allowing two hits and striking out one. The closer situation remains one worth monitoring in Kansas City as Barlow is now the fifth Royal to record a save in the young season.
