Todd Zola, tongue firmly in cheek at Rotowire, puts him in the elite class of closers with the comment, "Looking to build on an MVP calibre season"

Picks up an inadvertent MVP 10th place vote that was meant for Trea Turner.

Had pitched well, very well, until last night when he coughed up the last three runs of a five-run uprising by the Tigers (the Tigers, that's correct) in the sixth inning in Motown.

The Cubs end the first half of their season with an 18-12 record. They've scored three more runs than they've given up, so it could be, and perhaps should be, much worse. The Cardinals, who have played ten fewer games, are the only other team in the NL Central with a winning record (11-9). ESPN gives the Cubs a 96.1% chance of making the playoffs.

Now, suppose the teams were truly mixed -- mixed in the standings -- in each region? If we are looking at the MLB Central at the halfway mark, the Cubs are in fourth place, behind the Twins, the Indians and -- would you believe? -- the White Sox.

That's how MLB should have played this year. Top four teams in each region are in the playoffs. No wild cards. Four best keep playing, the other six go home.

Cubs would be sweating it then. They'd keep pressing the pedal to the metal. One eye on the Cardinals, the other on a sneaky team like the Reds (who have a -14 run differential and Trevor Bauer).

The way it's played now, the Cubs can put the gear in neutral and coast carefully to the finish.

Expanding rosters to 29 may not be enough.

Ryan Tepera (P) CHI-N - Apr. 05

Tepera could earn one of the Cubs' final bullpen spots when the regular season is able to begin, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: If the Cubs and other MLB teams get to use expanded rosters when the regular season begins, many will likely deepen their bullpens to deal with what figures to be a compacted schedule. Tepera, who entered spring training on the roster bubble, would stand to benefit in this scenario. The righty had a down year in 2019.
