Hilarious. They say the meek shall inherit the earth but it doesn't happen very often in our game.

One year someone announced Pudge Rodriguez as "IRod." One of our owners misheard and thought it was ARod. He eventually won the bidding at $34 and couldn't believe his luck.  Then we told him. IRod, not ARod. He said it was fine.  Pudge went on to post 332 116 35 113 25. He won the MVP.  $34 turned out to be a bargain.  ARod went for mid-$40s and posted only 285 110 42 111 21.

Lol, that's why the nominator is always supposed to state the player's position before bidding!

The Gerald Williams discussions -- wherein some leagues provide relief from bidding on the wrong guy -- made me remember an early incident in our league, founded 1985.

In 1986, we had an expansion owner.  When Roy Smalley came up for auction, he got him for a buck, and then LOUDLY proclaimed that he was the bargain of the century, and so on and so on.  Eventually, someone said, "Hey, where does he fit on your team?"  Owner wanted to put him at 3B.  Tragically, Mr. Smalley had only played 14 games at 3B in 1985, and didn't qualify there in 1986 under our rules.  We re-opened the bidding for owners eligible to take Mr. Smalley, over the SCREAMS of rage from the disappointed original purchaser.
