And last year it was the Hunter Pence triple ball to bat contact that messed up Kozma's chance to make a play to this year's play Alex mentions.

Agreed, there's lot to criticize about Matheny's decisions in the ninth. Though, to be fair, Wacha's fastball was clocked at 97; that may have been some part of Matheny's decision-making. I agree, it's not enough (especially regarding bringing in a lefty to face Ishikawa), but it does provide some insight into the decision.

It must. But if LVW doesn't know, no one does.

A reader at Baseball Prospectus, posting under Mike G's analysis of the game, points out that Wacha wouldn't have been in the game if Panda hadn't deflected Wong's grounder in the top of the 9th. Another adds, "The deflection play was pretty emblematic of the series. Not saying the Giants didn't deserve to win - they made fewer mistakes than the Cardinals - but, much like the 2005 World Series, it was a short series where nearly every game could have gone the other way were it not for an inch here or an inch there."

And I still am mystified why Wacha pitched to Ishikawa.

Does this make Wacha the 1st pitcher ever to be the losing pitcher in postseason games in which his team was eliminated in consecutive years?

?

No problem bringing him in to start the inning, but after that four-pitch walk...?

There's a fierce wind blowing and the weather is miserable. 5 of his 1st 6 Ks were swings out of the zone. It looked like the main problem with the walks was due to not having a feel for the changeup.

anyone see the start tonight? Couldn't get the STL game on TV, don't have MLB.

First 9 outs were K's, but done after 4 IP, 10 K's, 90+ pitches thanks to 5 BB, the last two with the bases loaded in the 4th. Very unusual appearance.

Would love to hear thoughts on his stuff, command in the first 3 innings, etc.

Apparently worked on his curve and a cutter. If he can get consistent with those pitches I can see him taking a huge step up.

I had to make a tough choice between keeping him or Taillon last year. I'm happy with my decision.
