And a trip home for the winter. That's a fact of AFL life, guys who are there one day aren't necessarily there the next.

Sorry, Mike, should have read it a bit more closely and not mischaracterized. (And, I'm happy to make it a real plug to Rotothinktank.blogspot.com.)

I didn't mean to say the bid was too high -- just that there's no reason for a team not in contention to make it. I think that if you were a team in contention, probably the one with the strongest pitching staff, you'd want to get Scherzer (1) in case he takes off, he'll make your staff even stronger, presumably replacing your weakest pitcher, and (2) in order to keep another contending team from strengthening their pitching staff.

That wasn't necessarily my bid (and thanks for quasi-plugging the blog, mike), that was the bid I recommended if you wanted him.

In both my leagues, he was owned on reserve lists. (I got him in one.) His first start wasn't so hot, but today was pretty solid.

I did see that Mike G. was going to bid $35. I like Scherzer a lot, but there's not a guarantee that he'll keep a rotation spot if/when Davis comes back. I think you need to have a strong pitching staff otherwise in order to make such a bid.

Jamie Moyer showed him what's it all about yesterday. Nevertheless, Scherzer showed enough -- more than enough -- to increase the buzz.

So what did folks pay for him?

In four starts in Triple-A, 23 IP, 12 H, 1 HR, 3 BB, 38 SO, 1.17 ERA. Then, of course, retired all 13 batters he faced in his major league debut last Tuesday, with only 6 hitters putting the ball into play. Let's keep a tally here of the money that gets spent for him tomorrow.
