The learning curve has largely taken place - which is why we had so much gnashing of teeth from Prado-types this winter as they sat around waiting for major-league contracts after not receiving a qualifying offer.

Quite the negative data point for cheap teams trying to do mid-level player extensions.

He was 33 when he signed it and was coming off a year with only 8 homers.

After 3 straight years of being bought as a $1 end-gamer with $10 upside ... and barely earning his bid price ... Prado hangs up his cleats.

Before the 2017 season, the Marlins gave him a $40 mil contract extension through 2019 ... which means he took home 1/7th of their total payroll over the last 3 years.

Ouch.
