Jim Bowden in his GM chair for The Athletic, looking for buyers and sellers at the trade deadline:

Philadelphia Phillies — BUYERS

Firing Joe Girardi and hiring Rob Thomson as interim manager has revamped the Phillies and changed their trajectory. A team that looked like it could be sellers reeled off wins in Thomson’s first eight games and now seem entrenched as buyers if the players can maintain the momentum. The Phillies (30-30) are nine games back of the Mets in the NL East, but just 3 1/2 games out in the wild-card race.

If they buy: The Phillies need to improve their team defense and, as always, their bullpen. They should target all of the quality relievers on the market, including veterans such as Bard and Melancon, as well as the younger relievers like Bednar, Jiménez, Gregory Soto and Josh Staumont, among others. The Phillies must be open-minded about potentially dealing position players such as Alec Bohm (under team control through 2026) and Rhys Hoskins (through 2023) if they can upgrade a poor defense.

If they sell: Team president Dave Dombrowski is unlikely to go down this path, but if the Phillies did, they have a strong core and could deal from the top of their rotation or even key parts of their lineup. I can’t see that happening unless they implode, which is what they were doing before Girardi was fired.

Mark Melancon (P) AZ - May. 19
https://www.rotowire.com/baseball/player.php?id=9302

Melancon didn't allow a baserunner and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning to tally the save Thursday against the Cubs.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Torey Lovullo declared that Melancon would remain the team's closer despite allowing 10 earned runs across his last four innings entering Thursday's appearance. As promised, Melancon was called upon in the ninth inning to protect a two-run lead, and he did so to collect his eighth save of the season.

My bid in the face of the K rate looks like irrational exuberance.

The Closer Monkey today:

Arizona Diamondbacks — Entering a tied game in the ninth inning, Mark Melancon got two outs with one man on before yielding two singles and a home run. By the time the third out was recorded, Arizona trailed by eight. Arizona saw success from its fill-in closers during Melancon’s recent illness, and any more of these meltdowns might test Torey Lovullo’s patience with the veteran.

Hierarchy remains: Melancon | Kennedy | Mantiply.

How much do 5x5 owners hate closers with paltry K rates? Melancon went for $6 in Tout Wars this week.

Might have been some agism mixed in. Not that Kennedy's a spring chicken.

The Closer Monkey today:

March 24, 2022
Arizona Diamondbacks — The Arizona bullpen will look completely different this season, after the free agent acquisitions of 37-year-olds Mark Melancon and Ian Kennedy (combined 65 saves in 2021) to handle the late innings. Kennedy says he’s happy to serve in the setup role for Melancon, his Team USA teammate the year before both were drafted in 2006. Behind the old guys is Arizona’s usual mix of passable veterans, the best of whom seems to be Noe Ramirez.

Starting 2022 hierarchy: Melancon | Kennedy | Ramirez.
Holds candidates: Kennedy, Ramirez, Caleb Smith, J.B. Wendelken.

More from Brittany Ghiroli yesterday at The Athletic:

Many pitchers at the complex are on a Tuesday and Friday throwing schedule to mimic spring training, with Zack Greinke, Shane Bieber, Kyle Hendricksand Zach Plesac among those who have already thrown bullpens at Bell Bank Park. Some, like the Dodgers’ Brusdar Graterol, still came in Monday to get some other work done inside. There are reportedly plans to try to find a similar facility in Florida that could accommodate players who have been waiting out the lockout closer to Grapefruit League locales.

With temperatures in the mid-60s, players blasted music and joked around, signs reminiscent of big-league spring training. There was Musgrove watching infield, Melancon going over pitch grips with coaches and players gathered behind the batting cage talking shop.

Most recent comment for the closer:

Signs with Diamondbacks
December 1, 2021
Melancon signed a two-year, $14 million contract with the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Melancon declined his option with the Padres in early November, and he'll now land a new deal with Arizona. The right-hander served as San Diego's closer in 2021 and led the majors by converting 39 of 45 save chances, and he posted a 2.23 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 64.2 innings across 64 relief appearances. The 36-year-old will presumably serve as the Diamondbacks' closer during the 2022 campaign.
