Ouch ... he's given up 5 HRs in 2 IP *and* has a BABIP = .519? Wow ... he's both bad and unlucky!

A BP author today called yesterday's outing "the pinnacle of ineffectiveness, the worst trip to the mound by a reliever of all time!"

I was reminded by Alex's post about watching multiple replays of Melancon's performance that I hadn't checked who owned the Melancon disaster in American Dream League, but I should have figure it out immediately. The Original Masochist.

No more fight indeed. Melancon just looked whipped out there. No confidence. When Adrian Gonzalez came out and tried to console/settle him, Melancon just looked mostly vacant.

Perhaps a head-clearing trip to AAA is in order.

Gave up a line-double to Kinsler that was misplayed by Ross, walked Andrus on four pitches, battled Hamilton for six pitches before Josh deposited the ball a row or two short of the Ted Williams Seat, and that was it. No more fight left in Mark Melancon.

Fastball topped out at 94. Curveball appeared to have plenty of bite. But his best fastballs were fouled off and his worst curveballs bounced in front of the plate.

All of this witnessed just now in full-game replay, sometimes more than once, on MLB.TV.

They don't call me the original masochist for nothing.

Our league now chases alleged future stoppers and stopper candidates well into silliness.

If Melancon is cheap because the job isn't his, he's a fine play. But spending more than a few bucks in hopes that he'll take over the job is a mistake. It could happen, but odds are well south of 50/50.
