MacKenzie Gore, LHP, Padres — After a scintillating outing in his first AFL start, the wheels fell of in Gore's second outing. He threw just 42% of his pitches for strikes (compared to 64% his first outing) and walked five of the 11 hitters he faced in 1.1 innings without striking out a hitter. Command and control were problematic all season for Gore, to the point he had to go back to the Padres' spring training complex to re-tool. He made it back to Double-A in the regular season and showed flashes of dominance but still with work to do to get all the way back. His fastball still got to the mid 90s on Wednesday and he showed flashes of a plus changeup, but there's still work to be done.

MacKenzie Gore, LHP, Padres — Gore's prospect stock dipped significantly in 2021 thanks to a year that resulted him getting sent all the way back to San Diego's spring training home in Arizona before starting the climb back up the minor league ranks. Quite simply, Gore needs a strong turn in the Fall League. On Opening Day, he took the first step. The lefthander spun five innings of two-run ball with three strikeouts and a walk. He brought his fastball up to 98 mph and got 10 swinging strikes in 88 pitches. He threw 56 pitches for strikes, giving a 63.6% strike rate for the day.

Soon, I hope.

When do we get 2021 minor league stats?

Howard Lynch LynchMob

The AFL started today ... and Gore was among the Opening Day starters ...

Gore's fastball sat in the mid-90s and touched as high as 98.2 mph in the third inning on the Statcast radar gun, giving him the hardest-thrown pitch of the game. A fifth-inning 97.8 mph heater was second-highest among all Peoria and Salt River pitchers. Perhaps it was no coincidence that both offerings came against Spencer Torkelson, the 2020 first overall Draft pick and the highest-ranked overall prospect in this year’s AFL.

I'm expecting (hoping) him to get a few starts in AAA ... whose season runs longer this year ...

With minor league seasons about to end, will teams be making call-ups? Or will they worry about starting the clock?

I guess we know the answer.

Baseball America today:

In Case You Missed It

Amarillo 3B Buddy Kennedy (D-Backs) homered twice and doubled as part of a 5-for-5 day . . . Toledo CF Daz Cameron(Tigers) homered twice. He’s now hitting .302/.364/.517 for Toledo . . . MacKenzie Gore (P) SD - Aug. 19

Gore allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk while striking out eight across 4.2 innings Thursday while pitching with the Peoria Padres of the Arizona Complex League.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gore was in official game action for the first time since June 18. The outing was impressive, though that should be expected given the level of competition. Even so, it was a positive step forward for Gore, who was expected to be a regular part of the major-league rotation by this point in the season.
