The Bags have complained I put a serious jinx on their pitching staff with my August 11 post. So I'm posting again. Should have done it yesterday.

You don't have to but you can. We expanded from nine this year.

I neglected to mention the Bags 11th pitcher: Balfour, who was activated yesterday (to replace CC) in time for the save.

10 pitchers, that is.

Do you have to carry 10 starters?

In a recent thread (I can't remember which one) I mention Hochevar as the one possible Achilles' heel in the Bags pitching armor. Here's what I meant.

The Bags' starting rotation:

Verlander
Sabathia
Greinke
Dempster
Beckett
Moore
Hochevar

The bullpen:

Nathan
Janssen
Cook

This ain't a mixed league, folks.

With a Hochevar's help last night, the Moose have a two point league on the Bags this morning.

The Bags can gain three points in wins, two in saves, five in ERA and one in Ratio.

Do I feel like Hector?

I do.

With his shutout last night, has a 16 2/3 scoreless-inning streak going... a new Hochevar or a hot Hochevar?

The new Hochevar has pared his arsenal down to "three core pitches," according to the AP account of the game. Four-seam fastball, curveball, changeup. Trashed are his slider and cutter.

While he's hot.

Until yesterday, no Royals pitcher had even made it through the eighth inning.

What's this? A solid start from Hoch? He was working in and around the plate, mixing pitches well tonight, putting the ball where he wanted it. He's capable of more such starts, if he could only find more consistency. He's a lot of work to do to earn Peter's $7 bid, though.
