Luis Castillo (shoulder) will make his minor league rehab assignment debut Sunday at High-A Dayton.
Castillo, who has been sidelined with right shoulder soreness at the outset of the 2022 campaign, threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and is getting close to returning to the Reds' starting rotation in late April or early May.

Reds manager David Bell said that Castillo (shoulder) will be aiming to return by mid-to-late April, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Bell further said that Castillo will probably be limited to 3-to-4 innings when he ultimately returns. The same holds true for teammate Mike Minor.

Reds GM Nick Krall said that Castillo will not be traded at this time, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Krall also said that fellow rotation-mate Tyler Mahle would not be traded. We'll see if it's just a question of whether the Reds could find the right market for Castillo, or if they truly intend to hold on to him for a while.

Will this help the Reds on the field?
C. Trent Rosecrans, Reds beat writer: No. Not in 2022, at least. Williamson and Dunn are added to the team's competition for the rotation along with top prospects Hunter Greene and Nick Lodolo.
The Reds have the makings of a dominant rotation a couple of the years down the line, but not in 2022.
Are more money-saving moves coming?
Rosecrans: Why stop now? Luis Castillo and Tyler Mahle could be the next ones to go. Like Winker, both have two years of arbitration remaining and both could bring back some talent, or maybe even be used to get rid of another albatross contract, like Mike Moustakas or Shogo Akiyama.

Having had Castillo in my home league last year - I can attest that he suffered badly from lack of run support down the stretch - Reds posted 24 runs over his last 10 starts (thats runs per game, and not runs while he was on the mound). And his bullpen didn't help him out particularly well.

Last 16 starts average 6 IP per start with a 2.96 ERA.....5-6 record.

The Reds had one of the better offenses last year (4.85 R/G, fourth highest in the league). Castillo had a pretty decent ERA (league ERA 4.20). It goes without saying, he came up short in the wins column.
The Baseball Forecaster has a way of saying it.
The xW formula gives him 14 Expected Wins.
W minus xW = -6.
Only Brandon Woodruff (-7) came up shorter.
