Kohei Arihara (P) TEX - May. 22

Arihara will be shut down for at least 12 weeks following shoulder surgery and may miss the rest of the year, Chris Halicke of SI.com reports.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Arihara was on the injured list due to a finger issue, but the Rangers have since discovered a much more serious injury. He'll go under the knife soon to repair a shoulder aneurysm.

think I will take my 2 wins and run. Probably.

That went bad fast.

Given that Arihara, who by Eno Sarris stat-driven estimates is the 60th best starting pitcher in the American League, I won't expect great things. He probably will not last the season with me, but I don't know a way to replace those 114 Ks, as estimated by Rotoman. If I toss him loose, it will cost me at least 60 Ks. OTOH, I don't like that whip either. I think he will be my worst pitcher until I find someone better.

Thing I noticed first on the Roster Resource depth chart is that Arihara currently is the only Texas starter who was NOT drafted in the first round -- Gibson, Lyles, Dunning, Foltynewicz, none drafted by Texas.

Not only will he throw everything but the kitchen sink at you, he'll also vary the speed at which he throws them. So far, so good.

The negative notes on Arihara point out his lack of Ks, though about half of the Ks in the stat sheet are from the past two outings. I bought him (cheap at 4) thinking he might be a league average starter, and he has the Texas ballpark as a helper, as well as West Coast parks that like pitchers. Glad to have the early stats in the books.

From FanGraphs from Rotowire:

RotoWire News: Arihara has reverted to the unpredictable style of pitching that made him successful in Japan, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. He threw seven different pitches in Monday's win over the Angels, according to Statcast. (4/20/2021)

Here's a page for Arihara. We should get his stats tomorrow.
