Here, of course, is the "banjo-hitting center fielder" alluded to on McCutchen's page. I say he is dissed in the MVP voting, but in fact he doesn't do all that badly. He's No. 17, just ahead of Kendrys Morales and Mookie Betts. Tell me that would have happened before the advent of WAR.

Agreed, Peter, it's worth the effort. I'm fascinated by the attempts to objectively measure defense.  And still, a metric that seems to say Kiermaier has been more than twice as good as anyone else in two-thirds of a season doesn't flatter Kiermaier as much as it throws itself into question.

The Fangraphs guys say it takes two years of defensive stats to outgrow sample size distortion. That's how many plays before a fielder's true talent is revealed.

Which is why we see wild swings from year to year in the defensive stats.

Since much defensive context is set by the profile of the pitching staff, and fielders alongside any given fielder, and coaches coaching, as well as the player's skills, it's pretty hard to give credit straight forwardly even after two years. Every fielder is playing with a different deck.

Which is why the inclusion of DEF in WAR is such a problem.

It isn't that we shouldn't be trying to get better at assessing defensive talent, or figuring out how valuable it actually is, but our ability to capture that value now lags way behind hitting and pitching values.

If it's a small sample size distortion, isn't it reasonable to expect that other players would be distorted?

When does the sample size become not small? When can we count on UZR/150 to tell us something?

Small sample size leads to wild swings, but he put up similar numbers last year.

Before he slides off the page -- no one else finds this hard to believe?

Is this possible?

The five best UZR/150 scores after two-thirds of the season:

Andrelton Simmons 14.2

Nolan Arenado 15.2

Nick Ahmed 16.1

Lorenzo Cain 16.7

Kevin Kiermaier 41.2

According to both Baseball-Reference and Fangraphs, Kiermaier has saved the most runs of any player at any position in the first half.

In this case I'd take the devil I don't know. Kiermaier.

I'm not sure what to make of Kiermaier. I know he had the "good glove, weak hit" label throughout the minors. What is the Rays' backup plan if he hits .235 like he did in the second half last year? Guyer? DeJesus? Or do they keep running him out there?

Who would you rather have in a 12 team AL only keeper league, standard 5x5? Kiermaier $1 or David Freese $5?
