Fifth on the list of Dodgers prospects, posted to day at BP...

5. Keibert Ruiz, C
DOB: 7/20/98
Height/Weight: 6’ / 200 lbs
Bats/Throws:
S/R
Drafted/Acquired:
Signed July 20th, 2014 out of Venezuela for $140,000.
Previous Ranking(s):
#3 (Org), #31 (Top 101)

The Report: After breaking out across two levels in 2017 then holding his own as a 19-year-old in Double-A in 2018, Ruiz nearly cracked the top 30 of last winter’s 101.  2019 saw the backstop take a couple steps back, however. Ruiz is a bat-first catcher whose best tool is his ability to make contact from both sides, and we’ve had evaluators put a comfortable 6 on the hit. The approach has stagnated, however, and one of Ruiz’s flaws has been an inability to develop enough selectivity at the plate. His free-swinging tendencies are mitigated some by the superior bat-to-ball skill, but he hasn’t yet been able to optimize his contact against higher-end pitching. To that end, the power has also revealed as a bit of a concern; he’ll show average raw with flashes of in-game, but the right-handed swing in particular is flatter and lacks explosiveness through the ball at present...
