Good news for the Astros.  I hate the owners for BS like this.

It wasn't his physical. It was completed and signed before the lockout. MLB just held it up b/c they were too busy preparing for the lockout event though it was signed and submitted before the lockout went into effect. It was finally approved today.

They had like 2 weeks to get it all done after the initial announcement.  Speculation is that they found something concerning in his latest physical and want to convert the player option to a team option.  Disappointing that it didn't get done, because now we likely wait months.

Perhaps his physical hasn't been completed and it's required as a condition of the contract.

Locally they say Verlander signed/agreed to the deal but is still a free agent until after the lockout ends.  Can anyone explain this to me?  Sounds crazy.

Sounds like he's throwing freely and with close to peak velocity.  I was a Verlander owner once, in 2013. Not in 2022.

Ps. His 2020 earnings don't scan, do they? That's a lot of plus for six innings.

Well, I got one right.  Verlander signs a two year deal with an opt-out,  essentially a one-year deal with a player option.  I love this deal for both the Astros and Verlander.  No draft pick forfeiture here.  Yes, it's a gamble for Houston.  But it is a $50 million gamble on a guy they know well.  And not a $350 million gamble on Correa.

I expect he will either be a Tiger or an Astro.  He has all the money he needs, so IMO this next deal will be a personal choice.

$20M hardly seems like a pillow contact.  If he doesn't think there's a multi-year deal out there, he'll take the QO.  The Astros are within shouting distance of a WS win even if they lose Correa.

Yesterday's show case = 2-year contract, maybe even three.

Ken Davidoff's top 40 free agents.

19. Justin Verlander (RHP, Age 38)

Perhaps the most fascinating person on this list, he won the AL Cy Young Award in 2019 and has pitched in just one game since thanks to Tommy John surgery.

Prediction: Yankees, one year, $20 million
