I'm afraid it is in 4x4. The breakdown:

$W = 13

$ERA = -8

$WHIP = -7

In decimals: -1.15

In 5x5, the qualitatives still weigh heavily, but the strikeouts move him into the black.

No one has a problem with the notion that mediocre starting pitchers earn more in 5x5 than they do in 4x4. Lots of people, however, have a hard time accepting that the best starting pitchers, even the K artists, earn less in 5x5 than they do in 4x4.

But if you buy that Verlander earned more in 5x5 last year than he did in 4x4, you have to buy that he earned less in 2012, because the money has to come from somewhere.

-$1?  With 15 wins?  Is that possible?

Seven of the 77 pitches he threw for strikes yesterday were swung at and missed. But he didn't pitch badly -- only two earned runs and six baserunners in seven innings -- and he even managed to get five strikeouts. The problem was that two of the baserunners didn't stop running until they touched home.

Possibly still feeling the effects from that core surgery in the offseason.

Agreed ... and it's not just velocity down. It's velocity WAY down. He's on the Tim Lincecum career path.

Velocity down. K Rate way down. HR rate up. Walk rate up. He's a different pitcher. Something is wrong.

First half snapshot: 129 IP, 4.88 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, 6.7 K/9, 2.1 K/W, .327 BAPIP

Any glimmers of hope for Verlander in the second half?

He had his fastball back in October and then had surgery to correct "core weakness."
