Lyles has better stuff than Blackburn. Blackburn has never averaged more than 4.5 K/9. Once he learns to use the big park of MMP to his advantage and gain some confidence pitching on the road he'll be fine.

The age is why I wouldn't give up on him. He's able to get major league hitters out at 21 ... but then, at age 20 Rick Porcello had a 3.96 ERA and 14 wins, and at age 21 Nick Blackburn had a 4.05 ERA and 11 wins. Lyles stuff seems on par with theirs.

Not impossible he'll learn/develop something that will make him a more reliable pitcher than those guys, but it's a longshot.

I would say that the jury is still out on him.

Check out the birth date above.

Since we're talking about the Pittsburgh offensive eruption yesterday - Lyles looked great the first time through the lineup, but come the second it appeared Pittsburgh was dialed in on everything he threw - not only hitting the ball, but crushing the ball. He was saved in the 4th by having facing McKenry and McDonald come up and then K'ing Presley ... but Brad Mills took a huge risk sending him back out in the 5th the way Pittsburgh had his number, and the Astros paid for it as the hit barrage began again and by the time the inning was over, the game was out of reach.

Clearly isn't a guy with the stuff to dominate - has to succeed by guile, and he doesn't have the experience to get past guys a second time. May be able to learn some new tricks over time that would help him - but right now I'd stay away. And were I Mills, I'd put him in long relief.

After battling to a draw yesterday, the National League is getting its butt kicked this afternoon. Lyles lasted into the fifth inning, allowing seven hits, all singles, and three walks, striking out none. Chris Sale is working on a four-hit, no-walk, 6-K shutout in the eighth inning.

Kyle Weiland will miss his turn in the rotation Friday due to a sore right shoulder. Weiland has traveled back to Houston to be examined by team doctors.

If Weiland isn’t ready by Tuesday and needs to go on the disabled list, Jordan Lyles could be called up to take his spot. Lyles has been outstanding at AAA Oklahoma City, winning all four of his starts and posting a 1.077 WHIP. Lyles took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in Tuesday’s 8-4 win over Albuquerque. Lyles has struck out 24 batters in 26 innings while walking only four.

Love those South Carolina natives and has talent, but his K rate above A ball is unacceptable.

Hmm...
Lyles gave up:
1 ER in his first start at AAA
2 ER in his second
3 ER in his third
4 ER in his fourth.
