I'm working on Big Prices for the Guide. Today I have Jordan Hicks with a price of $7. What do you think?

Save No. 2 yesterday getting three groundball outs, all on sinkers of 100 mph or higher. Mixed in some mid-80s sliders. Two of his sinkers were hit for singles.

Out of 14 pitches, one swing and miss (on a slider).

Minter has pitched the last 2 days too.

Again ... Vulture Watch notices that Raisel Iglesias has pitched in two straight games ... but fails to note that their suggested vulture (Hughes) has done so as well ...

VULTURE SAVE WATCH
Today
1. AJ Minter/Dan Winkler – Arodys Vizcaino is expected back today, but we thought that was the case yesterday as well.

Tomorrow
1. Dellin Betances – Aroldis Chapman has pitched in two straight…
2. Jared Hughes – …so has Raisel Iglesias.
3. Alex Wilson/Louis Coleman – Joe Jimenez has pitched in two of three, throwing 37 pitches. Alex Wilson is dealing with a calf strain, so he may not be available either.
4. Jordan Hicks – Bud Norris has gone in two of three.

Tyler Kepner in the Times today:

Most pitchers throw hardest by holding their fastball across the seams, meaning all four seams backspin through the air on each revolution. But Hicks prefers a two-seamer (also known as a sinker), which gives him that natural tailing action without sacrificing velocity. He rarely throws the four-seamer, but the Cardinals expect him to use it more, in time.

I've asked this before: why don't more pitchers throw both four- and two-seamers?

Or maybe the better question: how many do and how many don't?

What's it mean that these pitches are "sinker"s?  If these aren't "fastball"s, then maybe I don't know what a "fastball" is ...

According to StatCast, here are the five pitches Hicks threw to Odubel Herrera yesterday in the 9th inning, which also happen to be the five fastest pitches thrown in the majors this season

104.2 mph sinker — called strike
105 mph sinker — ball
104.3 mph sinker — foul
105 mph sinker — foul
103.7 mph sinker — swinging strike

He walked 2 and only struck out Herrera yesterday.

Quite the enigma.

In the first monthly XFL draft tonight, Hicks was chosen No. 1 by Brian Walton, who covers the Cardinals for various outlets. That's a tip!

Was given the 8th in a tie game tonight. He inherited Schwarber, who he immediately wild-pitched to 2nd base.

Facing Bryant, Rizzo, Russell, it was groundout, groundout, groundout. Nary a walk in sight.
