Joey Bart (C) SF - Jun. 02
https://www.rotowire.com/baseball/player.php?id=15403

Bart went 1-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout in Thursday's 3-0 loss to the Marlins.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Bart was the only Giant to reach base multiple times in the contest, which saw the visitors earn just six baserunners. The single snapped an 0-for-9 skid for the catcher, who had two walks and a run scored in that span. He's still slashing a meager .161/.305/.310 with four home runs, seven RBI, 12 runs scored and a stolen base in 105 plate appearances. With an abysmal 44.8 percent strikeout rate, Bart's struggling to make contact, though his 14.3 percent walk rate is solid.

I kept seeing Bart bid up in various auctions and thought "how's he going to be very good with that strikeout rate"?

Indeed ...

Joey Bart, C, Giants: Bart doubled yesterday after homering in his 2022 debut. The most encouraging aspect of Bart's first three games this year is he has shown better patience. He's walked four times and struck out three times.

Joey Bart, C, Giants: Bart hit his second home run of the spring. He's had a solid two weeks, but the plate discipline concerns aren't entirely alleviated. He's yet to walk this spring while striking out five times in 12 plate appearances.

I liked this outsider's look at the Giant's drafting philosophy.

Keith Law's most recent evaluation of Joey Bart (posted today at The Athletic in the top 20 rankings of Giants prospects):

4. Joey Bart, C (Top 100 ranking: No. 79)

Age: 25 | 6-2 | 238 pounds
Bats: Right | Throws: Right
Drafted: No. 2 in 2018

Bart had a disappointing year in Triple A, missing time with a quad strain, playing lethargic defense, and striking out nearly 30 percent of the time. The No. 2 overall pick in 2018, Bart is capable of playing plus defense with a plus arm, and may have been going through the motions in Triple A after spending part of 2020 in the big leagues. He has pull power and some pitch recognition, with swing and miss issues that make him more likely to be a .230/.300/.450 guy than a high-average hitter. Assuming his defensive issues were a temporary matter of being at a level where he didn’t want to be, with the majors beckoning this year, he still projects to be an everyday catcher for a long time, perhaps without the star potential the Giants wanted when they drafted him.

Clearly, there had to be a lot of joy in the Joey Bart camp when Posey announced his retirement.

But is he ready for the bigs?

The strikeout rate once he hit higher levels seems something to be very worried about.  Especially if he's going to need to focus on his catching trade.  Casali isn't a Posey but he's middling, both behind and at the plate ... so Bart will need to earn his ABs.

I feel like Bart might put up an $8-10 season ... but because of his name and former prospect status you'll have to spend a lot of that $8-10 to roster him.
