I think Searage is overrated.
Cole was responsible for 21 Ks tonite. He struck out 16 Diamondbacks hitters while going 0-5 with 5 Ks himself.

When I was considering acquiring Nick Kingham, I went to the Pirates SB Nation page to see how the die-hards felt about him. To my surprise, the Bucco faithful are NOT enamored with Ray Searage, and they specifically noted Cole's progress since leaving his tutelage.
I don't know enough to understand their dismay, but I think it boils down to them saying that Searage was trying to get pitchers like Cole to pitch to contact, instead of just, you know, telling him to strike out 61 batters in 41 innings.

What was his spin rate last year?
This year it's only slightly above the MLB average. But if it's a big spike over last year, it could be that moving to Houston is the best thing that could happen to a pitcher.
The question is why? Trevor Bauer says it's pine tar.

Geritt Cole Houston Astros not Texas Rangers Blasphemous!

And an ultra impressive 12.6 K/27 batters faced.

It's the pitch mix that has changed.
Matthew Trueblood wrote a great piece about it this week at Baseball Prospectus

I think they said on MLB that 36 strikeouts over the first three starts of the season is a record. It surely is for a pitcher who has pitched 21 innings.
Two years ago his K/9 was a mere 7.6.
In the 2013 archive, Slyke, Yoda and I talk about the fact that his very fast fastball didn't result in a lot of K's. I wonder if it has more movement now?

Off to a pretty decent start.

Gerrit Cole (P) HOU - Feb. 18
Cole relied heavily on his fastball in 2017 with Pittsburgh, but the Astros feel
he can benefit from throwing more offspeed stuff, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager A.J. Hinch stressed there won't be an overhaul, but rather a "tweak" in pitch usage for Cole, who surrendered a career-high 31 home
runs in 2017 -- 18 off his fastball. Hinch feels the key is to get a good game plan
in front of Cole, which could mean fewer fastballs in favor of his slider and changeup.
