I think Florida has next dibs on him, regardless of how his case in PA goes.  Law enforcement, not the Marlins.

It's just such an abjectly stupid story.  He does deserve whatever sentence he gets - but it just feels a lot more like dumbassery than actual predatory behavior.  Just a reminder that a lot of the guys who become very wealthy through sports would have a tough time keeping the lights turned on at home if it weren't for that particular brilliant talent.

Reinforcing that - Vazquez' lawyer was arguing the other day that he wasn't a flight risk if bail was reduced because he didn't have any signficant assets.  This is a guy who has made $7.5 million over the last 4 years.

I'm not sure of the laws in his state, but if he's convicted of a sex offense he most certainly won't be able to leave without consent and will have to register in the place he travels to. In any event, it looks like he's done and deserves to be.

Pre-trial hearing is today in Westmoreland County for his PA charges (felony statutory sex assault, 11 felony counts of unlawful contact with a minor, 10 felony counts of child pornography, two felony counts of corruption of a minor, and a misdemeanor count of indecent assault of a person less than 16 years old.)

Trial date is set for March 16.  It will be interesting to see if they come out of today with a plea deal - I can't imagine that Vazquez sees any value in going to trial on this given that he admitted to police that he'd had "sexual contact: with the 13 year old in her mom's driveway.  Although he claims not to know that she was a minor.

Does the prosecutor want the show of a trial (and thus, would he rather make any sentencing under a plea deal so extreme that Vazquez had no incentive not to fight it in court?)  We'll know soon I guess.

Critical to some of us roto owners who have him under guaranteed contract (he's a $15Z for my home league team) - because if he accepts a felony conviction and jail term I'm sure the Pirates will move immediately to terminate his contract - freeing the Baghouse Gang of a $8 buyout charge in our upcoming auction.

There was little incentive for the Pirates to terminate before Vazquez' trial since that would have put them in a potential messy battle over the $12.5 million he's owed for 2020/2021, and they may have ended up having to pay something to buy him out.  If he's convicted of a felony this removes the onus of MLB or the Pirates proving anything - so they can probably safely terminate without fear of the MLBPA filing a grievance (particularly since a sentence of >18 months effectively eliminates Vazquez's ability to show up to play during the contract term).
