Signs a one-year, $4.5 million deal with the Bucs.

The consensus is this is a good deal for the Pirates based on the upside. I have never been a Bedard fan, but this seems like decent deal. My concern is that Bedard is not happy playing in Pittsburgh, is a malcontent and is disruptive to a young clubhouse.

My hope is he is not injured by July so the Pirates can move him at the deadline for propsects when they are 30 games out.

In the Andino thread, I do Bedard a grave injustice. He enters tonight's crucial contest with a 2.84 ERA in his last three starts. Only 12.2 IP all told, with lots of baserunners, but compared to the other starters -- Beckett and Lester, for instance, have an 8.18 ERA in their last six starts combined -- not so bad.

A whole new ailment. A shame.

Odd that on a day when Bedard goes on the DL, two other pitchers (Edward Paredes and Chaz Roe) are designated for assignment and a catcher (Chris Gimenez -- 5 AB in the last 10 days) goes on the DL, the M's bring up a pair of catchers (Josh Bard and Jose Yepez).

Compare innings in 2008, 2009, and 2011. Does his arm fall off now? Will we see him in 2013? He's a wonderful pitcher when healthy.

Just made an interesting deal involving Bedard in a 24 team, AL/NL head-to-head league.

I sent Carpenter and Uggla over for Bedard and Blackmon.

Protect league, no contract years or salaries.

I think I like Bedard in a head to head - he's either pitching well, or he's not pitching.

A big reason why the M's are hanging around.

Didn't get the results through his first 4 starts. Since his 5th start (April 27) has pitched 10 games to the tune of:

4-1, 1.54 era, 0.905 whip, 63:14 (K:BB) over 64 IP.

In shandler-ese, 9 out of 10 starts were PQS DOMs, zero DIS.

Unabashedly, he's been my favourite pitcher for most of his career. Maybe it's the Canadian thing, or that I "got to know him" (vis-a-vis owning him) when he just broke in with the O's (probably the latter). I'd like to see his K-looking vs. K-swinging stats -- watching him he's generating lots of Ks by spotting a 92-3mph fastball on the corners when the hitter is looking for his curve. GB rate is solid too.

Curiously, it doesn't seem like he's throwing his change much, whereas he used to mix it in as much or more than his curve.

More importantly, the M's seem to be treating him responsibly -- most pitch counts lie on the safeer side of 100. Here's hoping he stays strong 'n healthy. Logic says to sell high, but admittedly I'm too attached.

Keeping one favourite is permissable, no?

Your bid for this guy is wholly dependent on your rules. Can you stash him? Are there plenty of harmless middle relievers available? It's almost impossible to have a "standard" bid for a guy like this.

So, is everyone excited about his couple of strong bullpen sessions? The odds are greatly against him of being a productive roto contributor in 2011, but I would still push him to $2-$3 in the odd chance he actually can reach the 100 inning plateau.
