Was watching that game ... in the first, he racked up 3 K's around an error and a base hit ...

In the second, he got up 2 strikes on Hasse ... and Pina had him throw two straight pitches in the strike zone - a fastball Hasse fouled off, and then a slider that was deposited on a line drive into the left field bleachers.

Came back for his 4th K, then a bloop single, then a line out to left where Boyd faked bunt and then jumped on a high fastball.

But then he kept trying to get the high strike - and Navas was refusing to call it - and after he walked Grossman and Candelario on letter high fastballs, he had to throw more into the middle of the zone to Melky with the bases full ... with predictable results.  Got one fastball past him, the second fastball was laced for a base clearing double.

The following Scoop homer came on a second cutter to exactly the same location.

Not sure if he just wasn't hitting his spots ... or if it was Pina's game calling ... but while he threw the ball past plenty of people (he had a 27% swinging strike rate for the game - which is crazy) he put too many pitches right where the hitters wanted them.

Pondering picking up Lauer in this week's FAAB run ... this pushed me over the edge.

Love grabbing former 1st rounder pitchers when it looks like they may have figured out how to unlock their talent.

The way Lauer is attacking hitters this season is quite a bit different compared to 2020.

Instead of throwing his four-seam fastball more than half the time, he's lowered his usage of that pitch to 37.7% while throwing his cutter a career-high 30.9% of the time.

Lauer is also throwing his slider and changeup more than ever before (17.3% and 13.3%, respectively) and all but abandoned a curveball that he'd thrown as much as 13.7% of the time when he started 29 games for the Padres in 2019.

"I think I'm just more comfortable with the changeup this year," he said. "I've always been working on it and I've always wanted it to be a weapon. I've always needed a pitch that was kind of moving the other way. So, that's the one that does it for me. The cutter has always been something that I've had."

Averaging 92.6 mph with his four-seamer, Lauer is also throwing that pitch faster than he ever has in his career.
