Yeah, but.  An Alonso is a gamble; if you're going to gamble on many spots on your rosters, many will not pay off.  You need Freeses AND Alonsos.

Good Stage 4 advice, by the way, from Texpope in June.

Would you have guessed who's No. 2 on this list?

David Freese Retires

After an 11-year career, David Freese announced his retirement from Major League Baseball yesterday. Freese will especially be remembered for his postseason heroics in the St. Louis Cardinals' 2011 run when he earned both the NLCS MVP and the World Series MVP. Fresse played in 69 postseason games during his career and finished with a 2.1 postseason Win Probability Added, which is 9th all-time. Here's a look at the top 10 in that category.

The thing about those consistent "small roto profit" guys ... (paging Nick Markakis, at least until last year) ... is that if their value is consistently around $10-15 bucks, they're eating a spot on your roster where you might have been playing for a Home Run.

You could have spent $8 on Freese, hoping for a $15 year ... or you could have spent $11 on Alonso, hoping for a breakout.  Yeah ... Alonso might have ended up striking out at a 40% rate and been back in Syracuse in a month, in which case you'd have been out $11.

But most leagues are so damn close these days that you need a few Home Runs to have a chance at winning ... a bunch of singles and doubles doesn't do it, unless you come into the season with an amazing protect list and just need to play it safe.

And in July, when dumping trades come around ... your David Freese who's exceeding expectations isn't going to fetch you bupkis.   While if you hit a HR with Alonso and you're willing to part with him ... you can potentially get enough value back in one deal to lock up the league.

And our auction bidding reflects these facts as much as it reflects projected earnings.

Small roto profits. Last five years: -$1, $0, $7, $3, $11. But not insignificant.

Former Padre :-)

Name the catcher the Padres got for him in trade?  Ugh ...

Ouch ... just looked it to confirm ... hmmm ... not the trade I remember'd ... Padres got Edmonds for him ... 103 PAs of 41 OPS ... wish they'd gotten a catcher, even a backup catcher ...

I looked at Freese after reading the Dominic Smith thread... I was aware he was having a nice year but nothing like this.
