The least expected pitching line in his second start: 5 hits, 4 walks, no strikeouts over four innings. If he does that on his third he won't get a fourth.

Two interesting facts in the Athletic today, credit to Jake Kaplan.  First on Martin and his local pedigree...

"Corbin Martin might be the first player ever to pitch at Minute Maid Park in a high school game, a college game, a major-league spring training exhibition game and a major-league regular-season game."

Next on how the Astros' analytics staff worked to convert him from a reliever to a starter...

"But their scouts and the TrackMan data liked his raw stuff. They bet on his talent and their player development staff to translate it to results.

In the low minors, the Astros worked with Martin to refine his delivery and helped him turn his strike-throwing from a deficiency to a strength. He’s walked only 2.8 per nine in 179 career minor-league innings. In Sunday’s debut, he issued only one walk, to the penultimate batter he faced.

If there was a knock on Martin in the minors, it was that he didn’t miss enough bats. His 8.4 per nine in Double-A last season doesn’t align with the quality of his stuff. In his month in Triple-A to begin this season, he improved that number to 10.4 per nine."

It is REALLY fun to be an Astros fan these days.  Wish I could say the same for my Washington Nationals.

Boy do I ever wish I had bid exactly what you did.

The blood bath:

Moose 40, Guns 25, Nova 22, Bad K 18, Veecks 11, Tooners 7

I now have $42 left to spend for the year. But that's Jackie Robinson's number, so I'm good!

I got him for $27/100.  Raised my bid from $17 at the last minute after reading this thread again.  Other bids were $13, $13, $12, $11, $7, $5, $4.  $27 was overkill, but I'm pacing for about 950 IP and our requirement is 1100, so I need starters and he could be a good one.

Alex: Thanks for the heads-up. Clearly tomorrow's American Dreams bidding war for Martin will be too rich for my blood.

Thanks Bob. Great eye-witness account. I'm psyched to bid on him tomorrow. Really glad my $24 bid for Emilio Pagan fell short.

Very sharp outing and a nice win for Mr. Martin and the Astros as they swept the Rangers today at Minute Maid.  Martin was surgeon-like, very precise with his control, seemingly only missing when he intended to do so.  He walked one while striking out NINE in 5+ innings.  Fastball was consistently 95-96, with a sharp slider and an 85 mph change mixed in.  If he has a 12-6 curve, he did not flash it.  And if he does, I honestly pity AL hitters.

If I played AL and he were available, I would run to get him, especially in a keeper league.  His stuff is not lights out power-wise but with that pitch mix and that control, he could be an all-star.

Super happy he is a member of the only AL team I care about.  I've never seen him pitch before today but wow, nice debut.

I'm going to his debut today and will provide a scouting report.  Reminder to all to wish you wives, moms, etc. a happy mothers day!
