Reportedly the Nats offer for Sale.

Why is anyone surprised by this trade? It's the same trade that was bounced around in July. Either Benintendi or Moncada, plus a couple others for Sale. The Red Sox got smoked by the Indians because their pitching was terrible. So now they're pulling the trigger. The White Sox wanted Moncada then, now they're getting him. Makes total sense to me.

I guess I have to keep Mocada now if I didn't before, don't I, Peter?

Kopech looked awfully good in Arizona.

Traded to Red Sox for Moncada and Kopech, two others. Wow. Not yet confirmed apparently.

The lack of quality starters in the free agent market just ups the ante even more.

Still and all, the contract makes Sale worth the moon in prospects, Sherman's right about that. Supposedly, Braves have said no to Dansby Swanson but would "consider...Ozzie Albies to front to a deal." I take consider to mean they would do that in a nano second.

An interesting and unfair comparison.  The earliest Sale could have been a free agent was going into 2018.  When he signed before the 2013 season, he agreed to a buy out of arbitration years and two additional contract years.  The deal was signed when he had one year of service time and was not going to be a super-two after 2013.  It's essentially the same thing that Jon Singleton did when he signed with the Astros.  Singleton, who has about 1/6 of a year of Major League Service will make $2M in 2017 and 18, just like he did in 2015 and 16, $2.5M in 2019, $5M in 2020, and $13M in 2021 (granted there are buyouts that make the deal significantly less in the three last years). Deals like Sale's cannot be viewed in a vacuum or compared to true free agent contracts signed today.  He'd be getting another $38M had he been a total bust.

Being shopped hard by the White Sox, according to Joel Sherman in the Post. The contract that Rich Hill is about to sign just raises the price.

Sale "turns 28 in March and has three years at $38 million left on his contract. "

Hill "is likely to get three years at $40 million or more" and turns 37 in March.

Point totals for pitchers who received MVP votes:

Chris Sale 3

Justin Verlander 2

Corey Kluber 1

None for the Cy Young winner.

I think I would have put Zach Britton down toward the end of my ballot. But that's just me.

And yeah I own Sale, and yeah I sure could have used him today
