After last night, more than half the balls in play have landed for hits since he was traded. Which doesn't count the three out of play. In 18 innings this year he's given up more hits than he allowed in 72 last year.

Those cost-cutting Red Sox (ingredient three).

Ken Rosenthal at The Athletic:

So there it was Friday night, a template for how some trades will be completed during this abbreviated season.

Ingredient No. 1: A desperate buyer. That would be the Phillies, who entered the evening with an 8.07 bullpen ERA, the worst in the majors by nearly two runs per nine innings.

Ingredient No. 2: An eager seller. That would be the Red Sox, whose season is a train wreck, in part due to their lack of upper-level pitching depth.

Ingredient No. 3. Cold hard cash. As in $815,000, the amount the Sox included to cover the roughly $1.05 million combined remaining on the contracts of relievers Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree.

The quotes from the RedSox players really bring home the pressure that rides on on every game.

I'll cut and paste a few paragraphs if you can't get to this article or others from The Atheltic. Or Baseball Prospectus. Or Baseball America. Or...

My thought is I am only promoting the paid sites when I link to them.

The Eck he's not. Just ask Eck.

“He’ll make you smoke cigarettes, man,” Dennis Eckersley said on the NESN broadcast.

Brandon Workman (P) BOS - Feb. 12

Red Sox interim manager Ron Roenicke said Workman will open the season as Boston's closer, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Workman finished out the 2019 season as the closer after the Red Sox started the season without a set end-game option. "I think so," Roenicke said. "I think what he did last year deserves that shot to be the closer. I think it's always more ideal if you have roles for those guys."

Avoided arbitration, agreeing to $3.5 million.

His last year of arbitration. Just needs to have another year like this one.

In Strato-O-Matic leagues, he'd be one of the first picks.
