Takes Acuna's place as BA's top prospect on the Braves.

SCOUTING REPORT: Riley’s plus-plus raw power has always been his best attribute. He has the potential to hit 25-30 home runs regularly in the majors. Riley generates consistent loud contact. He has a pull-heavy approach when he gets into advantageous counts but has the strength and power to drive the ball out to right and right-center field. Riley’s pull-heavy approach leads to a strikeouts, but he has always managed to stay on the right side of the line that separates free-swingers who can’t hit from those who can hit enough to get to their power. Riley’s bat-to-ball skills give him a chance to be an average hitter to go with his excellent power. He’s shown an ability to make adjustments. His swing is more direct to the ball, and he has sped up his hands as a pro. Defensively, Riley’s conditioning and work has helped him turn himself into a plus defender. His plus-plus arm is his best attribute, but he also has developed the quick feet and quick hands scouts look for at third base. His quickness is more of the first-step variety because his raw speed is below-average.

THE FUTURE: Riley should factor in the Braves’ big league plans in 2019, but the emergence of Johan Camargo and the free agent signing of Josh Donaldson cloud the picture. The Braves could be patient and let Riley get additional time at Triple-A, but they have stated he will get a look in the outfield at spring training.

David Regan at Rotowire, ranking the blue-chippers in the high minors just itching to get the call:

    6. Austin Riley, 3B, ATL
Riley has returned from a knee injury without missing a beat, as the 21-year-old has hit .318/.412/.500 in 44 at-bats. Overall, he’s even better at .310/.377/.543. He’s posted some lofty strikeout rates in his progression through the Atlanta system, including a 29.6 percent mark in Triple-A this year, but the overall numbers are impressive, and Riley ranks as the No. 14 prospect in the game according to RotoWire’s James Anderson. The strikeouts and rehab from the knee probably leave him in the minors for now, but with regular 3B Johan Camargo hitting a modest .248/.346/.422, a Riley hot streak could get him to the big leagues in short order. With the Braves firmly in the playoff hunt, they will certainly play the best players the rest of the way. They just need to figure out when Riley is “ready.” I expect it will be in mid-August at the latest, probably earlier.

Sunday's Stars

Austin Riley, 3B, Braves. Riley had one of the best days we'll see all year. He homered with one man on in the first, hit a solo home run in the fifth and followed it up with a grand slam in the eighth. He also added an RBI single in the seventh as part of his 4-for-5, 3 home run, 8 RBI day.

Second in homers, one behind Acuna, in the AFL. Worked his way up to No. 21 in Baseball America's top 100. Rotowire has him No. 18.
