Cincinnati Reds – Amir Garrett picked up a hold last night, pitching five clean outs ahead of Raisel Iglesias. Garrett has been more of a long reliever for the Reds and has been talked about as a starting pitcher for them, but this is his fourth hold on the season and he is the best arm in the Reds bullpen behind Iglesias. This is enough to bring him into the hierarchy, but be aware that he could become a spot starter at any time.

Updated hierarchy: Iglesias | Hughes | Garrett.

The Monkey this morning:

Cincinnati Reds — Amir Garrett pitched a clean seventh inning with two strikeouts last night. Garrett, a would-be starter, has one of the better arms on the rebuilding Reds. On a different team, he might have been relegated to long relief, but given Bryan Price’s habit of using relievers for multiple innings, Garrett could see chances at holds or even vulture saves. Raisel Iglesias followed a similar path to closing for the Reds.

Updated hierarchy: Iglesias | Hughes | Garrett.

Amir Garrett (P) CIN - Feb. 26

Garrett retired all six batters he faced in his spring training debut Sunday, striking
out four, drawing the attention of manager Bryan Price, the Cincinnati Enquirer's
John Fay reports. "Amir was as good as I've ever seen him," Price said. "He had
velocity with command and threw the slider and changeup for strikes. He was filthy.
That's the type of performance you want to see from a guy that's coming off of a
tough season. He came out. He was snorting fire and attacked the zone. It was one
of those dare-to-be-noticed moments because he was a standout, an absolute standout."

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The big takeaway from Garrett's performance was how strong his fastball looked, after his fastball was his weakest pitch last season.

Amir Garrett (P) CIN - Feb. 15

Garrett (hip) is being limited during fielding drills and running for precautionary
reasons, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett had platelet-rich plasma and stem-cell injections over the offseason, so the Reds are taking it nice-and-slow at the beginning of camp.
This shouldn't put him behind in his quest to win a roster spot, but he's in an
uphill battle to make the Opening Day roster on his own merits.
