What Eugene said seemed right to me, which is why I said what I said, but then I thought it might be a good idea to look it up. There are lots of ways to break this down, but since 1947 there have been 121 hitter seasons played by a player 20 years old or younger, in which he's had more than 162 AB. 70 years, fewer than two per year, but what surprises is that in the first half of those 70 years (1947 to 1981) comes 76 of those seasons. Since 1982 there have only been 38. See the whole list here: https://bbref.com/pi/shareit/xwM2d

Which also indicates the greats have always been promoted quickly.

That's not right. There are a bunch of players at the age of 20 who went 4-4. Trout (twice), Andrus, A-Rod (twice), Griffey Jr (twice), Ruben Sierra, Robin Yount, Claudell Washington, Cesar Cedeno, Ed Kranepool, Tony Conigliaro, Rusty Staub, Orlando Cepeda (twice), Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, and Aaron all did it in the post-integration era.

There were always really young players who came up and played right away.  Robin Yount comes to mind, probably because he is the exception.  But, the old philosophy was that players needed a lot more seasoning than they do now.  If you're successful up the levels, why spend extra time at AA and AAA?  Wade Boggs won a series of batting titles in the high minors, but he didn't profile as a third baseman because he didn't have power.  "Finally" the Red Sox promoted him and he won batting titles in the majors.  And OBP titles too.  And even some OPS+ titles.

BTW, Rafael Devers went 4-4 last night.  The only 20 year olds to have accomplished that in the Majors are Giancarlo Stanton, Ken Griffey Jr. and Robin Yount. (At least that was according to one tweet I saw last night).

You're not allowed to say "finally" about a guy who is still 21. But I wonder about this new proclivity to promote the young ones quickly rather than to wait. Not arguing for the old way, there's so much evidence for the youngsters kicking ass unexpectedly. So who am I to Judge?

But if that's true, why was the old way so wrong?

Finally getting the call.

Will start for the Mets tomorrow.

If not now when?  Perhaps the Mets see this as a lost season and won't call him up until September just to slow his clock down more.  With Walker slated for free agency, however, it is hard to imagine he isn't penciled in for a full time gig Opening Day '18.  If that is the case the Mets don't really gain any time by waiting.  Any insights?

Is it time yet for the Super 2s?  I haven't seen any lists of most likelies, but he would seem to be up there.  Or maybe that is just my Mets fandom kicking in (I am not an owner).
