Dustin McGowan Philadelphia Phillies
I agree. Only thing not to like about McGowan is the salary he's going to command in leagues where he's not under contract. WHIP is much better than his ERA and his Rating is much better than his WHIP. Bill James Handbook puts his Component ERA at 3.06.

And that was last year.

Mark Mulder St. Louis Cardinals
Back under the knife in September to "clean up unhealed portion of his rotator cuff." Cardinals think he'll be ready by spring training.

Dustin McGowan Philadelphia Phillies
Nasty, nasty stuff. The 3.67 ERA Post All-Star hides the .217 BAA and 7.99 K/9 in the same span. I seldom like the idea of bidding more for a pitcher than what he earned the year before, but the arrow is pointing way up on McGowan.

Casey Kotchman Florida Marlins
If you believe in Kotchman, raise the bid to $18. First base was a notoriously weak position last year, with only two hitters - Carlos Pena and Justin Morneau - cracking the $20 barrier.

Scott Baker Los Angeles Dodgers
I'm not suggesting Baker's turnaround was necessarily authentic. I'm saying that if you want to take the ride, you're going to have to pay at least $8, and even that might not get him. He was the 33rd best starter in A.L. 4x4 in 2007, and the 33rd best starter in AP bid limits in 2007 was worth an $8 bid.

Jeremy Accardo Washington Nationals
Significantly better Rating than WHIP, because Rating says a walk is not as bad as a hit and counts gophers as very bad things. Accardo was heroic in second half (20 saves, 1.84 ERA), despite a 4.17 xERA.

May be done. The bid is in case he's not.

Nick Swisher Atlanta Braves
How many first baseman played 60 games in center field last year? An old-fashioned-hard-nosed ballplayer. Be interesting to see if the A's put him up on the trading block.

Mark Kotsay San Diego Padres
At this point in his career, not much upside, even with a completely healthy back.

Alex Rodriguez New York Yankees
Across the board, Peter's retrospective prices for standard 4x4 AL and NL Rotisserie leagues are a little bit lower than mine. (A nice masochist's argument why that we can start here if anyone's interested.) In these standard leagues, unless you have a very good freeze list, it's not a good idea to bid more than the player can reasonably earn.

Not so in mixeds leagues. Peter and I both feel you should bid like crazy on the best available players, for the simple reason that there are so many other merely good players to choose from. The easiest people to identify in this sport (actually, in any sport) are the best players; much harder to rank all the merely good players. Therefore overpay for the best players and wait for the merely good players who will still be available when the competition has finished overpaying for the merely good players.

That's our theory, anyway, and we've had a lot of success with it.

Which is to say, $51 should get A-Rod in a non-freeze mixed league (15 teams or so). If it doesn't, keep bidding.

Signed a one-year contract with the Phillies. Pinch-hit for the Cardinals 38 times and hit .406.

He gets almost as much coverage as his brother in Moneyball. Michael Lewis, fearless reporter that he his, mentions his fondness for pot and booze.

Moneyball became such a huge hit that the paperback edition doesn't even put the subtitle -- The Art of Winning an Unfair Game -- on the cover.

In the index...

Steinbrenner, George
Stevens, Lee

When it's reissued, might be best to drop the subtitle altogether.

It's all those hits he's allowed that make it the smart play not to buy into the second half ERA too strongly. Only one thing changed significantly changed: The rate of home runs he allowed. Is that something he controled? I wouldn't pay a lot this year to find out.

A 3.44 ERA Post All-Star means there's no way you're getting Baker for $5. In deeper freeze leagues, if the pitching is thin enough, you might even toy with the idea of keeping him at $10.

There's a vesting option for 2010, too.

Aaron Rowand's VORP was 52 last year. Jenkins' was 8.9. I can see why the Phillies didn't commit to Rowand for five years, but next year they're going to lose some games because of it.

Dontrelle Willis Baltimore Orioles
"To be honest," concludes the Baseball Forecaster in its Dontrelle Willis comment, " xERA has never been all that impressive anyway."

Maybe not, but a 4.52 xERA in 2007 is a whole lot better than the ERA that counted in the standings; with a few more wins, he might have actually been worth something.

While Comerica Park is less of a pitchers' paradise than it's thought to be, Dontrelle figures to benefit from pitching on a team that plans to win some games, to hitters that for the most part have never seen him.

Moving to the homer-friendly confines of the Phillie playpen, he might be good for 30. But even if he is, at the end of 2009, when they've finished paying him $13 million, the Philiies are going to ask themselves, What were they thinking?
