Justin Germano Texas Rangers
I agree with LM about that secret, but another secret of roto success is finding the diamond in the rough. Germano knows how to pitch, he's that sort of guy, and he's learning how to do it at the major league level. His success last year was slightly impressive given the limitations of his stuff.

What I'm saying is that cheap pitchers with something to like can play an important role on winning roto teams. That's either for breakout potential or for spot usage. But if you're in a dogfight in ERA and Ratio and the Padres are on the road have some sense!

Carlos Zambrano Florida Marlins
The Patton$ calculated for the projections in the software is much different than bid prices. Alex is predicting a $24 season out of Zambrano. I'm predicting an $8 set of stats, and that's a little inflated because of the way the formulas work in the software.

Still, and this is the tricky part, I paid $20 for Zambrano in Tout Wars and though surprised I'm not unhappy. Huh!

All I can say is that I look at Zambrano's stats and I see a slow steady decline as the innings pile up, and I think there's a reasonable chance that there's an injury on its way. This is a hunch more than anything else, but there is the trend in the numbers. Take 60 innings away and degrade the qualitatives a bit and you end up with an $8 pitcher.

But he hasn't shown hurt, he's had a good spring (he's generally been a slow starter), he's coming into the age when pitchers who have survived their youth often thrive, so you can't write him off. You have to find some middle ground and take on some risk if everyone else is running away.

I bid $20 in Tout while price enforcing. I didn't think I'd get him, I thought there were a couple more bids there, but there weren't and so I have him.

Everybody gets to play this one their own way, but for me even if I'm pessimistic on a player, absent real evidence I don't want to see my opponents grab a bargain.

I decided $19 was too much a bargain.

Kelvim Escobar New York Mets
I'm not giving up hope in the XFL. I picked up Mike Hampton in the reserve rounds the other night, but that's a comment for a different thread. As for Escobar, there was no hint of a problem back in November. And just a hint of a problem until two days ago. Then, kablooie!

I'm not sure Casilla isn't deserving of the hate. Lackadaisical, immature, defensively stinky, kind of all the things Gardenhire was not when he was coming up.

Great future potential? The guy is 27 years old and had a 52-40 K/BB ratio in about 95 innings at AA-AAA last year.

No thank you.

George Sherrill Atlanta Braves
I wound up not trading him (actually, my freeze is tomorrow afternoon) and I'll keep him at $10. My thinking is that the market for Sherrill, who will be a set-up anywhere else he goes, won't materialize until July, and he'll be the closer until then. The old guys the O's have are no better than Sherrill is, and the young guys they have aren't ready or have far greater flaws than Sherrill does.

In the software. AP's bid limit is $24 in the software, but he projects an $8 season's worth of stats.

With all the potential injuries in the Braves rotation, Bennett is definitely worth a reserve pick, with great future potential.

Nick Adenhart Los Angeles Angels
The rating show's what Nick Adenhart does well: keep the ball in the park. An R2 in the software.

Actually, a manager who devotes vast numbers of ABs to completely worthless players is a Twins tradition. Gene Larkin, anyone? It's been a joke in our league for years.

TJ ... where do you see the projections? What I'm seeing is that AP is projecting $21 for 4x4 after earning 21/30/27/24/18 the previous 5 years.

Though we probably need to keep things in perspective; we're talking about a guy who hit .251 with zero power in between AAA and the majors. Yeah, he's young, but that's not exactly going to buy him a ticket to The Show as a regular.

Alex, am I correct in seeing that you're predicting an $8 season out of Zambrano in 4x4? 10-7 in 152 IP, with a 4.32 ERA and 1.34 WHIP?

I think you gave up too much for him, Slyke (Billy Butler at $10).

Solid pitcher in a year or two but this is a learning year. He doesn't have the skills of Verlander or Hernandez; he's someone that will improve step by step. Hope for 15 wins and a 3.75 ERA and plan for 12 and 4.25.

I think one of the "secrets" to success in roto is to avoid bad pitchers ... Germano is an OK #5 guy at best ... which has value in MLB ... but is death in roto ...

Phil Hughes Minnesota Twins
I like Hughes this year, and just traded for him in my AL 4x4 keeper league. His salary is $10, and he has one year left on his contract.

I think he is a $16 - $18 pitcher this year, but would appreciate a little feedback from the crew.

What do you guys think about Hughes this year?
