Barry Bonds San Francisco Giants
And at this stage of the game, Lofton may well be a poorer defensive center fielder than either Angel Pagan or Todd Church ... while Barry offers a 300+ point OPS upgrade over Lofton.

Kenji Johjima Seattle Mariners
I'm a believer in two starting catchers in tough AL only 5x5 leagues. I paid $15 for him with 16% hitting inflation in one of my leagues to go with Kurt Suzuki as a freeze at $5. I also got Ichiro and Matsui, so I have a Japanese theme on offense. I had the second to last bid on Iwamura, but let him pass at $17.

Catcher seemed thin with Victor frozen and Mauer an injury risk. Johjima was a clear #3 on my board and I wanted the production from a light position. I also tend to value batting average more than most owners and Johjima has shown solid skill there.

Carl Crawford Los Angeles Dodgers
I paid $42 for Carl Crawford in a 16% inflation 5x5 AL league and I considered it a discount. I had his raw value calculated at $40. I'm glad he's batting 2nd this year and not 3rd. He should keep running and with Figgins healthy all year and Carlos Gomez he will have competition to win the SB crown in the AL.

Maybe this is the year that he gets 20 HR, but I projected his value with 15. I also gave him another increase in BAVG and 100 runs from an improved lineup.

Ichiro Suzuki Seattle Mariners
I have him in both of my AL 5x5 leagues. He cost $36 in a 16% hitting inflation league, a discount in my book, and $37 as a freeze in a 21% inflation league.

Hideki Matsui Oakland Athletics
I'm banking on another .290 100 25 100 season from Matsui. I paid $22 in an AL 5x5 with 16% hitting inflation. I was very pleased with the price.

J.D. Drew Boston Red Sox
I got Drew in both of my AL only 5x5 leagues. One for $15, the other $14. The first had 16% inflation for hitters, the second 21%. I was bidding in the second league against the same person I bid against last year. Luckily I missed out with my $20 bid last year as he went for $21. This year the same guy didn't want to get burned again and he dropped out at $13. I'm happy to have him in the Boston lineup at that price.

While the HR will be short of 20, he should post an average above .280 with solid RBI and Runs numbers in the 80s. I sure hope he's an odd/even guy and can produce his normal even year numbers in 2008.

Barry Bonds San Francisco Giants
If Beltran goes down they will need a CF and my guess is Kenny Lofton's phone will ring. He doesn't have any baggage and has a "championship pedigree."

My guess is that it's mainly a function of (a) need; and (b) GM's willingness to deal with a shitstorm. For a lot of reasons, I see the Mets as a candidate - there are so many high profile players that Barry won't outshine everyone, and if Alou doesn't come back on a timetable and/or Beltran's knees act up, they may well be buyers before anyone else is prepared to.

The operating owner, Howard Lincoln. Now if it were me trying to decide who might be the better DH, Vidro or Bonds...

Bill Hall Baltimore Orioles
I suspect that some of last year's difficulties were due to learning CF on the job, hence the aggressive bid. Don't go crazy, though, he's not THAT good.

George Sherrill Atlanta Braves
Mariano went for $30 and Jenks for $28. Huston went for $24, but we allow a team to keep a player's stats until the end of the year if traded to the NL. Ryan was $19 and Wilson went for $10. Soria and Accardo were froze.

Up until he made the team, Adam Jones was an obvious R1 in the software. In the current update he's got bids from PK, MF and AP. In the final update, which will be posted late tonight, he may have slightly different bids. And then, of course, people who use the software will have the final say. That's the fun part.

Alex Ramirez Chicago Cubs
Next year we will figure out how to get players with no stats into the database. This year, come on, isn't it worth $30 to see what our latest bid limits are in 4x4, 5x5 and mixed leagues for Alexei Ramirez?

Final update for this season will be posted late tonight.

The most obvious place is Seattle. Even though the Mariners boss (can't remember if it's owner or GM) has given his best Amy Winehouse imitation on that one.

George Sherrill Atlanta Braves
And Sherrill was released in our league; he was keepable at $15, but the owner passed. I'm predicting some WEIRD stopper results in our Saturday auction.

Of the second and 3rd tier closers in my 5x5 league, CJ Wilson and Sherrill were both kept at $5 each. Percival went for $11, Todd Jones and Borowski went $17 each. Accardo went for $14, BJ Ryan was kept for $9. Huston Street went $20 with a risk to be lost to the NL. Soria $21. All of the big closers went $26 or 27.

I should have said a little better. But you hit the nail on the head about a better team. BAL is downright awful and , in addition to Sherril being untested as a closer, the opportunities will be far and few between. Borowski is quite simiiar to Todd Jones and Jones has 80 saves over the last two years. Will it be a roller coaster ride , you bet.

Carlos Gomez New York Mets
After the two early steals, $8 won't get him in our league (our auction is Saturday); one of the amusing parts of a post-opening-day auction is seeing the overreaction (including my own) to the first week. I've already got Figgins and Granderson, so the temptation to snag another wheels guy is substantial . . .

Mike G's comment is well-taken -- Giambi certainly LOOKS more human. I like the bid.
