It's not just about pitch count. It's about pitch count over consecutive games. A young guy could throw 120 in one game as long as it's not high stress innings and the next isn't also high pitch count. It's also about progressive innings/workload increases over several years. Pitch counts averaged around 105 in the 1960s-1980s. But, they weren't a forced automatic out of the game good or bad at 100. They were more feel based. Now pitch counts average around 103. It's a negligible increase, but bad performances are forced to 100, which is where a lot of the problems come in.

If that altering his release point thing is true, then what the heck where the Nats doing? They didn't notice or didn't they care?

Texpoe's comment on David Price is interesting, as it appears they have abandoned their careful handling of Price this season. Eleven times already he has thrown over 110 pitches, including his very first start in early April. Maddon has not been as confidant in his bullpen this season, with good reason. Let's see if Price breaks down in 2011!!

Thinking I've heard is that Strasburg was getting fatigued by needing to pump up the velocity a lot more times a game than he'd done in college ... and with the pressure to keep being "STEPHEN STRASBURG" he was altering his mechanics to still hit high 90's when his arm was tiring.

Is this time to give Tampa Bay more gold stars for how they've handled David Price?

Jim Riggleman has now ruined 3 of the best young hurlers we've seen in the past 2 decades: Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, and Stephen Strasburg. Nice trifecta. Gonna be a great trivia question for your grandchildren.

Ugh....how disappointing.

Strasburg's mechanics are far, far better than Prior's were and Wood's are. Doesn't mean he can't blow out his arm but it's much less likely.

So Wood and Prior were on carefully monitored pitch counts? Live and learn.

Thus far Riggleman is using about like he did when he broke Kerry Wood and Mark Prior. Only a moron would entrust another star hurler to J.R.

According to Game Scores, Ozzie's contention ("My guy was better") was almost right. Strasburg 75, Floyd 74. Which just shows there's something wrong with game scores. Great game. Might turn Sasha and Malia into baseball fans.

Totally thrilling. Now the challenge is to keep him from being interviewed to death. They aren't off to a good start.
