Every year under Scioscia the Angels have out performed Pythagorus. It's pretty incredible. Usually in the neighborhood of +5 games over the expected record. Something has to be said for the unexplainable mathematically. He has to be doing something right that others aren't doing. Maybe it's defensive alignment. Maybe it's bullpen utilization. But, when it's repeated year after year, it's not luck. Luck isn't repeatable.

Correction: on July 22 the Angels had a run differential of -5 (or thereabouts) and were a few games above .500. Today their record is 54-56.

Ever since I posted this comment, the Angels have played as if hell-bent to correct the Pythagorian injustice. 2-8 in the last ten games. Run differential has moved from +5 to -25.

Answer to the Coke quiz: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The other team, besides Detroit, to have a winning record while being outscored. Perhaps we need to look no further than this pitcher for the explanation. |

I think he is cheap enough to take a chance on him. I passed on him in the Rotoman's league but grabbed him in my money league.

With this link mass-mailed to anyone who has ever bought an MLB ticket, I'd suppose it will serve to jack the price back up on Kazmir. Are you going to bite on his 'new' pitch? http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100315&content_id=8796090&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&partnerId=ed-3255907-128250308 |

Alex, just calculated inflation from freeze rosters and looked at team profit totals. The Contending Bar better be set at an $80 profit or it's over already.

He was great with the Halos last year. I think the key is his FB velocity. It was hovering below 90s with TB but then recovered in LAA.

Amen to that, Alex. I'm your garden variety Rotisserie addict, salivating over 28 active hitters (turning a blind eye to those 4 catcher slots), while blanching at the thought of how ghastly many of those 2200 IP can easily become when spread over a staff of 18 hurlers. Still, I've held fast to the simple truth of your $40 profit to contend in the old days. With so many grays, I liked the black & white of the $40 goal.

I wish I knew, Jem. The 18-man pitching staff has my head spinning.
