I agree wtih you Eugene, though he doesn't walk until 2011. I think you trade him in '09 or, preferably, in the offseason before 2010 when Cardenas is more ready to play, and get something of value for him.

Howard is already 28 years old and he is overweight. If he leaves at age 30 or 31, whoever signs him is making a big mistake. I don't expect him to age well.

Cecil Fielder is his #2 comp by age, Mo Vaughn #5. Both played around 1500 games and didn't age well. Among his top 10 by age, only Norm Cash had a long career, although he never matched his age 26 career year again, or even came close.

The Phillies would do well to let him go to arbitration again and lose again, and then let him walk as soon as he's eligible to go.

Well, Howard got what he wanted, at least in the short term. $10 million is a lot of cash for Howard, assuming he doesn't hit .313 every year. I think the .268 he hit last year is more akin to his true average potential. The real question is whether he backs off on the strikeouts...the power is real, but lack of contact at this rate is disturbing.

The long term Howard outlook for the Phillies is not good. The Phillies intimated that they would give Howard a 7 year $100 million contract, and Howard's agent scoffed at the idea. Howard will be gone by 2010. Utley will move to first, and Cardenas will come and play 2B.

Pujols is at 7 years for $100 M, courtesy of Cot's Baseball Contracts (http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/). Great site.

There's some speculation about that Howard is looking for a Pujolzian contract. I don't know offhand what that is, but I'm sure it's really large. The problem is that at this point Pujols has seven years in and has hit 282 homers. Howard in four years has 129, as you can see above. The issue here is that Howard is just two months younger than Pujols. I think Howard is a $29 player, but I would go $30 for sure.
