When you watch a condensed game, you aren't concerned about sample size, you are looking to see what kind of grounders are being hit. If they are weak grounders, you are more impressed than if they are hard grounders; that's all. Alas, there was no condensed game posted for last night's KC-Detroit game. Based on a 414 IP sample size, I likewise would keep the bets this weekend very modest. But in the right circumstances, I would say $2 when somebody else said $1, based on Hochevar's spring training stats and what I've seen him do in the past. With a little bit of encouragement from his first outing. |

@MikeG: Speaking of- I got Dice-K for $11 in one league and $9 in the other. Both 5x5. Kazmir went on the DL after both drafts and he went for $17 and $16 respectively.

I'm with Eugene. My bid is slightly more aggressive than Peter's, but there are better bets out there. One thing I'm noticing as I go through my A.L. lists yet again is that it seems like half the pitchers worth buying are on the D.L. |

Alex, Don't forget about sample size. One game is nice, but even Johnny Vander Meer threw consecutive no hitters. His career best ERA+ was 137. His career ERA+ 107. That year it was only 117. I wouldn't take one start from Hochevar, no matter how promising, and put him past Peter's 5x5 bid. |

7 bucks will still get him this weekend, but that was a very encouraging outing last night. P/S 89/57, G/F 16/5. If I have time later today, I'm going to watch the game on condensed play at MLB.TV, see how many of the groundball outs were routine, how many hit hard. When I see one easy grounder after another, I'm much more inclined to credit the pitcher than blame the batter. (For those wondering what the hell I'm talking about -- how obvious can you get? -- this is my continuing conversation with Voros McCracken.) |

Any Mariners or Royals anyone would like comments on? Seeing them on Friday out at Peoria.

jem, I believe the loose adage for pitchers is about 500 MLB innings before they put it together...though some of them, as we know, never do.
